Problem Solving: Cargo Challenge, Years 5-6

The following information is taken from the i-Teach Teaching Guide which supports the i-Teach activities.

How to use this tool
Problem solving activities focus the class on finding the correct combination of variables to solve a particular problem. Each activity involves evidence of up to three variables that can affect what happens in the animation. You select all of the settings for all the variables before you press ‘play’ to run the animation, rather than changing each variable and watching the animation update in real time as you do in Exploring Environments. Some of the animations include sensors giving evidence that may help to solve the problem.

Objectives:
Sc1: 2c, 2d, 2f, 2g, 2h, 2i, 2j, 2k Sc4: 2c, 2d, 2e

QCA unit:
6E Forces in action

This problem challenges the class to move some cargo in the quickest time from A to B. The boat has to take as much cargo as possible but in the fastest time. Explain that some of the goods are needed urgently so it is better to get some cargo there than none at all. The engine speed increases the push force, moving the boat more quickly. The wind speed and the cargo load both increase the friction, which slows the boat down. Hotspots are on the crane, the propeller and the anemometer. The thermometer is a ‘red herring’ sensor which does not give helpful information.

Teaching
Ask the class to try different engine speeds and in different levels of wind.
Bullet point Predict the time for each of the tests and record it before we start the test.
Bullet point Is the temperature making a difference?
